This post
will discuss about why CPU and GPU processor needs to be maintained for better
performance.
Actually,
this is to deal with interior of CPU and GPU. What are they made up of?
Answer to
this is really simple that is they are generally made up of silicon or
germanium transistors which are semiconductors i.e. they conduct electricity
partially. Now, the answer to main question is nothing to do with computing, it
is basically pure physics, particularly electrodynamics.
Now how does
any conductor conduct electricity?
Into the
metal at atomic level displaced kernel electrons are drifted from one end to
other due to potential difference across the ends of the conductor. Now as
electrons drift from one end to other they pass through the gap of metal kernels,
as they pass through metal kernels they kind of interact with the positive kernels.
Thus, more is the interaction less is their velocity and in turn lesser is the
conductance.
As temperature
of conductor increases kernels and other particles start to vibrate more
passionately due to increasing kinetic energy, as they vibrate their chances
for interacting with drifting electrons increases. and thus electrical
conductivity decreases with temperature.
So, to
calculate anything, transistors in CPU and GPU act as a switch to generate
binary signals which is used to show the required results or output, but as
temperature of CPU and GPU increases their transistor’s electrical conductivity
decreases significantly, which hinders the rate of binary signal generation and
with increasing temperature these semiconductors become insulators and eventually
CPU and GPU stop taking the load and they is of no use.
Thus,
processing units are needed to be cooled as cool as possible for optimum results.
Using this principle quantum computers are cooled to the critical temperature
of super conductivity to give best results out of the CPU.
